Curia Invests $28M to Expand Sterile API Manufacturing Capability

The expansion is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Editor’s Take: Curia says this investment builds upon its Valladolid site’s decades-long history of sterile manufacturing expertise.

Curia is investing $28 million to expand sterile API manufacturing capabilities—for both steroid and non-steroid products—in Valladolid, Spain.

A global CDMO, Curia’s integrated network includes more than 20 sites around the world and more than 3000 employees.

Curia Expanding in Multiple Countries

The company in May completed a $4 million upgrade of its API aseptic suites in Valladolid. Also in 2026, Curia opened an expanded New Mexico manufacturing campus and announced expanding its Glasgow, UK sterile fill-finish site.

This most recently announced expansion should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Importance of Sterile API Manufacturing

“Our Valladolid site is uniquely positioned to deliver variable batch size manufacturing,” Scott Wagner, President, API, at Curia, said. “This investment is an important step in the continued growth of our sterile API capabilities. It will enable us to build on the site’s decades of sterile manufacturing expertise, while offering our partners greater flexibility.”

The Valladolid expansion enhances support for injectable suspensions and other complex sterile formulations. This dovetails with Curia’s sterility assurance and solid-state engineering expertise. Included among that knowledge: aseptic crystallization, milling, and micronization.

How It All Works

To explain technically, as part of the expansion, closed systems with barrier isolators provide primary containment for sterile API handling. This minimizes operator interaction, through integrated service panels.

Expanding these capabilities also gives Curia flexibility in scale, from grams to metric tons. Other offerings include customizable aseptic packaging configurations that preserve sterility assurance, reduce handoffs, and mitigate transfer and storage contamination risks.

Curia’s company capabilities, which cover discovery through commercialization, include small molecules, generic APIs and biologics, plus regulatory and analytical expertise.
